Activated charcoal is nothing but a carbon with extra pores. Here the charcoal is treated with oxygen to open many pores in it. This carbon is made extra porous to absorb the impurities. Honk Kong based Conglomerate Huichen Investment Holdings Ltd investing 28 million for the project, attracting a Chinese company to invest 200 million towards a charcoal factory.
The country has excellent resource for coconut shells. There is a vast demand for activated carbon produced in Srilanka, but was unable to cater due to war. Activated carbon mainly used for filtration and chemical reaction. Activated charcoal filters are embedded into filters for effective filtration and has demand in international market. Sri lanka presently produces 25 to 30 percent of activated carbon out of which 70percent of coconut shells are wasted. Now the system in place and investment available, Coconut Development Authority (CDA) has drafted plans to collect coconut shells. Chinese companies see Sri lanka as the marketing hub of South East Asia. It is expected that annually 1,200 tones of coconut shells to be used to produce activated carbon. The companies investment plans are been drafted and the demand for coconut shells will see a drastic increase.
